Malted Milk 44% - 2oz/60g

$9.95

60 grams

Asheville has won national attention for its thriving craft beer scene, boasting morebreweries per capita than almost any other U.S. city. Rising up to support this industry is a new kind of malt house, one that provides locally-farmed, artisan malts that bring depth and character to beers. We are honored to collaborate with this innovative business, Riverbend Malthouse, to bring you our Malted Milk Chocolate: a milk chocolate featuring Heritage barley malts, locally milled by community grain miller, Carolina Ground. To create this chocolate, we toast malted barley, and grind it with our cacao and organic milk powder.

It holds the honor of being the reigning favorite in our bean-to-bar lineup among the residents of Asheville as well as international judges, bringing home in 2016 both a silver medal in the Americas category of the International Chocolate Awards and a finalist ribbon in Garden & Gun's Made In The South Awards.

This chocolate has a creamy, malty flavor, with aroma of nutmeg and cinnamon. It might bring you back to your youth, when ‘malt’ meant a light, chocolatey milkshake.

Ingredients: sugar*, cacao, cocoa butter*, non-fat milk powder*, malted barley flour, butter oil (milk)*

French Broad Chocolate

Dan and Jael co-owners French Broad ChocolateOur Story: The Beginning – Costa Rica
When Dan and Jael met in 2003, the course of each of their lives began to orient towards cacao and chocolate. After a trip to the cacao-rich jungles of Costa Rica, Jael and Dan made the decision to move there, and settle in a small village called Puerto Viejo de Limon on the southern Caribbean coast. They each dropped out of graduate school (Jael was studying business; Dan, law), packed their lives into a 40-foot, vegetable oil-powered school bus turned cozy mobile home, and drove to Costa Rica. They opened a café and dessert shop, called Bread & Chocolate, where their business values began to form, and sourcing ingredients direct from farmers became a part of their identity. After two years in Costa Rica, Dan and Jael were ready to begin their next chapter. They sold Bread & Chocolate to one of their cooks (it still operates today, 14 years later!), hopped back on the bus – this time with their Costa Rica-born son - and headed north to the United States, where they settled in Asheville, NC and founded French Broad Chocolate.
